The 6 best email marketing programs for small business in 2026

Six programs genuinely suit a small business, and they differ in how much work they leave you holding, which for a business with nobody whose job it is is the whole decision. Pick the one with the deepest feature set and it goes unused while the invoice does not. This list is ranked on the criteria published further down, against vendor prices checked on 7 September 2026. MailerLite is the cheapest clean tool with nothing to learn, and we make Nitrosend, which is first here on the published criteria because an AI agent drafts and sends while the owner only has to approve.

The best email marketing program for a small business is MailerLite if you want the cheapest clean tool, Nitrosend if you would rather approve a campaign an AI agent drafted than build one, and Brevo if you hold a big list and email it occasionally.

The short version

Small businesses do not fail at email because they picked the wrong tool. Smaller and medium-sized stores struggle to do email marketing at all, because there is no time and nobody whose job it is. Every recommendation below is really an answer to the question of how much work the tool leaves you holding.

  • Cheapest clean tool. MailerLite. Good design, a low paid entry price, nothing to learn.
  • You do not want to build it yourself. Nitrosend. Ask Claude, Codex or Cursor for the campaign, read it, approve it.
  • A big list you email once a month. Brevo. It prices on emails sent, not contacts held, so a large dormant list is cheap.
  • The automation is the product. ActiveCampaign. Deepest flows here, at an annual commitment price.
  • Events, classes, a venue. Constant Contact. Event tooling nothing else on this list has.
  • You already know it. Mailchimp. Familiar, and the most expensive way to hold contacts you rarely mail.

If the send you have in mind is really one campaign to the whole list, the email blast platform rankings segment the same market by send type instead of by business size.

Just because you are a ten-person store does not mean you should be stuck with a toy. It means you cannot afford a tool that needs a specialist to operate.

How they compare

Scores are out of 10 against criteria whose weights add to 100. They are published in full at the bottom of this page, so you can disagree with a weight and re-rank the table yourself.

We make Nitrosend. It moved to first on this list in September 2026, and the criterion that moved it is the founding-team one, on which it scores highest of the six platforms here. That criterion is scored on the same four questions for every vendor, the workings are published at the bottom of this page, and if you weight it at zero the platform at the top of this table is MailerLite.

Scores are the author's, against the criteria stated on this page, updated 2026-09-17 to add an AI-native capability criterion (agent/MCP access, on-brand auto-design, ChatGPT marketplace presence, scored 0-10 and added as up to 1.0 point). Prices are the vendor's published USD list prices on the date shown and change often.

1. Nitrosend

Best for: an owner who would rather describe the campaign than build it, and who sends receipts as well as marketing.

I built this because I was sick of manually creating email newsletters. You connect Nitrosend to Claude, Codex or Cursor over MCP and ask for what you want: draft the campaign, build the segment, import the contacts, tell me what happened on the last send. The MCP server exposes 28 nitro_* tools, and API, MCP and CLI access are on every plan including the free one. Nothing sends until you approve it.

The pricing shape suits this reader specifically. Contacts are unlimited on every tier, so a shop holding 12,000 old customers pays nothing extra to keep them, and transactional email lives in the same account as marketing with the streams kept apart, so a receipt and a promotion are not two vendors and two bills.

Be clear-eyed about the free plan before you rely on it. It is 8,000 emails to start and then 500 a month, with a limit of 100 / 500 / 5,000 recipients per rolling 24 hours for Free Probation / Standard / Trusted, which means a free account cannot push a 4,000-person campaign out in one evening. That is a rate limit, not a trial. Paid starts at $20 a month for 20,000 emails, checked 7 September 2026.

Where it loses: no on-site popups or browse abandonment, which a store gets from Klaviyo or Omnisend. No inbound parsing over REST. And the template gallery is smaller than the older platforms, which matters less than people expect. In my own e-commerce years the campaigns that worked were minimal and simple, and a founder-written email consistently outperformed the produced corporate one. Against the incumbent most small businesses arrive from, we keep a Nitrosend and Mailchimp comparison.

2. Brevo

Best for: a business holding thousands of contacts it emails once or twice a month.

Brevo bills on emails sent rather than contacts stored, and its free tier puts no cap on contacts at all. For a clinic, a gym or a shop with a decade of customer records, that is the right way round, and it is usually several times cheaper than the per-contact platforms at the same list size. SMS, WhatsApp and a basic CRM are bundled in.

The trade is enforcement and depth. Brevo publishes hard bounce and complaint thresholds and acts on them quickly, and the account reporting goes away with the account when it does. Automation is fine for a welcome series and stops well short of ActiveCampaign.

3. MailerLite

Best for: a small business that wants a good-looking campaign out the door today with nothing to learn.

The cleanest interface in this category, dependable delivery, and the lowest paid entry price among the general marketing platforms here. Landing pages and signup forms are included, which matters when the business does not have a website worth adding a form to.

Two limits to know. The free plan was cut to 250 subscribers and 2,500 emails a month, down from 500 and 12,000, and the paid tiers moved with it, so its old position as the cheap and stable option is gone. And the free plan excludes API and MCP sending, which its own pricing page states, so a free account cannot be driven by software.

4. ActiveCampaign

Best for: a small business whose email is genuinely driven by what a customer did, not by a calendar.

Behavioural triggers, a real CRM in the same product, and multi-step workflows that survive complexity. If you are running lead scoring or a long consultative sales cycle out of email, this is the one that will not run out of room.

Read the billing carefully first. Every price on the pricing page is an annual commitment rate with no monthly option offered, the plan the page promotes costs several times the entry plan at the same contact count, and from November 2025 new accounts pay for all contacts including unsubscribed, bounced and unconfirmed ones, while older accounts pay only for active contacts. It is also more product than most small businesses will use.

5. Constant Contact

Best for: a local business that runs events, classes or bookings alongside the email.

Event marketing, RSVP handling, social posting and scheduling, wrapped in an interface an owner can operate without training. If the newsletter is really an announcement about next Thursday, this is built for that.

There is no free plan, only a trial. Sends beyond the plan allowance bill at $2 per 1,000 as the page states. There is no transactional API, so receipts and confirmations have to live somewhere else, and SMS is included only on the top plan.

6. Mailchimp

Best for: a business that already knows the interface and does not want to move.

The largest template library in the category, the widest app integration list, and the most familiar product in email marketing. If somebody in the business already runs it competently, that is worth something real.

The bill is the problem. Mailchimp charges on total contacts, including unsubscribed contacts until they are manually archived, so a business emailing a big list monthly pays as if it emailed daily. A list that accumulated over years and gets one send a month is the worst case for that model, and it is a very common shape for a small business. If that is you, the Mailchimp alternatives page is the specific version of this one.

Key features to look for in a small business email program

Ignore feature lists. Four things decide whether the tool gets used.

  • How the contacts are counted. Per-contact billing punishes a business with a long history and a slow send cadence, which is most small businesses. Per-send billing punishes high frequency to a small list. Work out which shape you are before you compare prices, and read what email marketing actually costs.
  • Whether the automation runs without you. A welcome series, an abandoned cart and a winback are the three that earn money. If they take a week to build you will not build them. The email automation workflow page has the three in order.
  • Whether segmentation is usable by a non-marketer. The difference between a 0.2% and a 2% complaint rate is usually who you sent to, not what you wrote. Email segmentation covers the basic cuts.
  • A drag and drop editor, but less than you think. Every tool here has one. The campaigns that work are usually plain, and the ones that look most produced are often the ones people ignore.

Which email program is cheapest for a small business?

It depends entirely on how each one counts you. Brevo and Nitrosend bill on emails sent, so a business holding 20,000 contacts and mailing them monthly pays for 20,000 emails rather than for 20,000 people. Mailchimp, MailerLite, Constant Contact and ActiveCampaign bill on contacts held, so the same business pays every month whether it sends or not. Compare at your real contact count and your real send volume, never at the entry price, and check whether unsubscribed contacts still count against you.

Can I run email marketing without hiring a marketer?

Yes, and that is now the normal case. The tools that make it work are the ones an agent can operate, because the bottleneck in a small business is never the software, it is that nobody has an hour. Nitrosend, MailerLite, Brevo and beehiiv publish first-party MCP servers, so an agent can drive them directly rather than clicking through a browser.

What should a small business send, and how often?

Start with three automated emails and one campaign a month. The welcome email, the abandoned cart if you sell online, and a winback at ninety days do most of the work, and they run without you. One monthly campaign written by whoever founded the business, in plain language, will beat a weekly produced newsletter written by nobody in particular. Frequency is the fastest way to burn a list, and every unsubscribe is a customer you paid to acquire.

Moving from your current program without losing deliverability

  1. Export contacts and engagement history together while you still have access. Engagement history is what lets you send to people who actually open things during the switch.
  2. Clean what you exported. A list does not improve by changing platforms. The email blacklist checker shows what you are carrying.
  3. Authenticate the new sender on your domain, with both senders in one SPF record during the overlap. The email authentication page has the records.
  4. Rebuild the two or three automations that earn money first. Flows never migrate between platforms, whatever a migration guide claims.
  5. Send to your most engaged people first and widen slowly. How to warm up an email domain has the ramp.

FAQ

What is the best email marketing program for a small business?

MailerLite for the plainest job at the lowest price. Nitrosend if you want an AI agent to draft, segment and send while you approve. Brevo if you hold a large list and mail it rarely. ActiveCampaign if the automation is the product. Constant Contact for events. Mailchimp if the familiarity is worth the bill, which for most businesses under 10,000 contacts it is not.

Is there a genuinely free email marketing program?

Several, with real limits. MailerLite is free to 250 subscribers and 2,500 emails a month. Mailchimp is free to 250 contacts and 500 emails a month. Brevo allows 300 emails a day with no contact cap. Nitrosend gives an 8,000-email starting budget and then 500 a month, with full API, MCP and CLI access on the free plan and a limit of 100 / 500 / 5,000 recipients per rolling 24 hours for Free Probation / Standard / Trusted. Constant Contact and ActiveCampaign have no free plan. All checked 7 September 2026.

How much should a small business pay for email marketing?

Paid entry prices among the platforms here run from $9 to $20 a month at the smallest tier as published on 7 September 2026, and the number that actually matters is what you pay at your contact count in a year. At 10,000 contacts the same monthly campaign costs $20 a month on Nitrosend's Pro plan, $135 a month on Mailchimp's Standard plan, and $149 a month on ActiveCampaign's entry plan, rising to $375 a month on the plan its own page promotes. Same email, same list, three very different bills.

Do I need a separate tool for receipts and order confirmations?

Not necessarily. Most marketing platforms treat transactional email as an add-on or leave it out entirely, and Constant Contact has no transactional API at all. Nitrosend runs both in one account with the streams separated internally, so a newsletter cannot crowd out a password reset. If you already send receipts through SendGrid, Mailgun, Postmark, Resend or Amazon SES, you can keep that transport and move only the campaign layer.

How long does it take to switch email platforms?

The import takes an afternoon. The warm-up takes weeks. Budget for the second one, send to your most engaged segment first, and do not schedule the switch in the week of your biggest promotion.

Will an AI agent send emails without my approval?

Not on Nitrosend. The agent drafts, segments and prepares, and a person approves the send. A first campaign to 20,000 recipients or more is held for a human to look at regardless.

How this list is ranked

Seven criteria, weighted, adding to 100. Every price in the table was read from the vendor's own pricing page on 7 September 2026, and every one of them moves.

  • Time to a sent campaign, 21%. How long from signing up to an email a customer receives.
  • Pricing model honesty, 21%. Whether the bill tracks what you send or charges you for holding a list.
  • Automation depth, 13%. Welcome, abandoned cart, winback, without a consultant.
  • Deliverability, 13%. Whether the tool stops you making the mistake that burns your domain.
  • Agent and API surface, 9%. Whether software can do the work instead of you.
  • Support when it matters, 8%. Whether a person answers on the day something breaks.
  • Founding team and track record, 15%. Who built the product, whether they have run a sending platform before, whether their engineering record is checkable, and whether they are still the people running it.

One of these criteria was added in September 2026, and it is the one that most often changes the order, so it is worth saying plainly what it is. Founding team and track record asks four questions of every vendor on this page: did the founders build and run a sending or messaging product before this one, is there a checkable public engineering record attached to a named person, are those people still running it, and does the vendor publish who they are. Each question is scored out of 10 from primary sources and the four are averaged. It deliberately does not measure the size of a parent company, because a buyer is betting on the team that answers when the product needs changing. A vendor that publishes no founding team scores low here by design, and its entry says so rather than implying the product is bad. Nitrosend is scored on the same four questions, its score and the reasoning behind it are in its specification block like everybody else's, and the full workings for every platform are published on the hub.
