I am George Hartley, co-founder of Nitrosend. I have been building email platforms for fifteen years and my companies have sent more than 6 billion emails. This list includes our product, ranked against published weights, and I have named where each provider loses.
How this list is ranked
Engineers evaluating transactional providers consistently name the same five things, so those are the weights:
- Deliverability, 30%. Inbox placement and stream separation. This category carries more weight here than on the general email API list because a password reset in spam is a support ticket and a churned user.
- Reliability and latency, 20%. Behaviour under a traffic spike, and time from accept to inbox.
- Developer experience, 20%. Docs that match the API, maintained SDKs, fast first send.
- Logs and analytics, 15%. Searchable per-message logs, signed and retried webhooks, real error reporting.
- Pricing, 15%. Transparent, predictable, with a free tier for testing.

1. Nitrosend
Best for: teams sending transactional mail today that will need campaigns and lifecycle email later.
POST /v1/my/messages queues a transactional email or SMS, and delivery runs through the normal background sending pipeline with sub-second acceptance, branding and tracking. Idempotency-Key is supported, which matters more than it sounds when your retry logic fires twice on a payment receipt. The nitro_send_message tool covers the same job for agents: receipts, password resets, one-time codes, order confirmations and system notifications.
We split transactional and marketing streams internally so a newsletter cannot compete with a password reset, while keeping both in one account. That is the whole argument for picking us over a transactional specialist. Two vendors means two DNS setups, two reputations and a seam between them, and the seam is where incidents happen.
One genuinely useful detail: legally required authentication and recovery flows can be marked transactional, so they still reach contacts who have unsubscribed from marketing while retaining personalisation. Getting that wrong is how people accidentally block their own password resets.
Where it loses. At enterprise volume we are not the cheapest. Nick, who handles our enterprise deliverability questions, was blunt when pricing a lead: at Enterprise size we would still be more expensive than Klaviyo. And if you only ever send transactional mail and want the lowest possible unit cost, that is Amazon SES.
Free: 8,000 emails then 500 a month, with full API, MCP and CLI access. Paid: from $20 a month for 20,000, unlimited contacts. More on the transactional email API page.

2. Postmark
Best for: transactional-only workloads where inbox placement is the entire job.
Postmark wins the deliverability criterion outright and it is not particularly close. Message Streams are the cleanest implementation of stream separation in the category, the support is genuinely excellent, and the product refuses to become a marketing tool, which is why it stays fast.
If you will never need campaigns, this is probably your answer. It loses points here only on the criteria it deliberately does not compete in: no marketing layer, no agent surface. See Nitrosend and Postmark compared.

3. Resend
Best for: modern app code, particularly React and Next.js.
Cleanest API and docs in the category, React Email is a real improvement over HTML tables, and resend-mcp gives agents a send path. Broadcasts and Automations exist but are the simple end of marketing, so the stream separation story is partial rather than architectural. See Nitrosend and Resend compared.

4. Amazon SES
Best for: the lowest unit cost at volume, with engineering capacity to spare.
$0.10 per 1,000 on a la carte pricing, or $0.16 on the Essentials plan that new accounts default to since 21 July 2026, and configuration sets for stream separation. No product layer, no meaningful analytics, reputation is yours to manage. Best used underneath a platform rather than alone. See Nitrosend and Amazon SES compared.

6. Mailgun
Best for: transactional plus inbound and routing rules.
Strong API, mature signed webhooks, flexible routing, and real inbound parsing, which Nitrosend does not offer at all. If your app receives email as well as sends it, Mailgun belongs on your shortlist and we do not. See Nitrosend and Mailgun compared.

7. SendGrid
Best for: teams already inside Twilio.
Enormous, mature, will not fall over. Transactional and marketing are two separate products sharing a login, which is exactly the seam this list penalises, and shared IP pools mean your reputation partly depends on other senders. See Nitrosend and SendGrid compared.

8. Loops
Best for: SaaS teams who want product and lifecycle email in one opinionated tool.
Similar shape to Nitrosend, priced per contact rather than per send, which is cheaper for high-frequency senders with small lists and more expensive for the opposite. No agent surface. See Nitrosend and Loops compared.

The part most teams get wrong
Transactional emails are the most underrated category in the inbox. They have the highest open rates of anything you send, and most companies treat them as plumbing. Stripe's receipt is 472 pixels wide and better designed than most homepages. Webflow turns a verification email into onboarding. Meanwhile the median SaaS password reset is a bare sentence on a white background.
That is wasted real estate. The design of a transactional email should be treated as a brand moment rather than a template, because it is the one message you can be certain the customer opens.
Before any of that reaches a customer, test the message you are about to send rather than a captured copy of it. The engineering counterpart to the design point is the discipline not to let marketing copy leak into it. A receipt with a promotion attached stops being transactional, both legally and in the eyes of a spam filter. Keep the streams apart, and keep the receipt a receipt.
FAQ
What is the best transactional email API?
Postmark, if you send only transactional mail and inbox placement is everything. Nitrosend, if you also need campaigns and flows in the same account or want an agent to operate it. Amazon SES, if unit cost at volume dominates.
What is the difference between transactional and marketing email?
Transactional is triggered by a user action, sent to one person, and may reach people unsubscribed from marketing. Marketing is batched, segmented and consent-gated. See transactional vs marketing.
Should transactional and marketing email use the same domain?
Use separate subdomains. A marketing send that draws complaints should not be able to damage the reputation carrying your password resets.
Is there a free transactional email API?
Yes. Nitrosend gives 8,000 sends then 500 a month with full API access, Resend 3,000 a month, MailerSend 3,000. Compared on best free email API.
How fast should a transactional email arrive?
Accepted in well under a second, delivered within seconds. If password resets routinely take minutes, you have a queueing or reputation problem, not a provider problem.
