What order confirmation emails are

An order confirmation email is an automated message sent to a customer immediately after they complete a purchase. Its primary purpose is to confirm the transaction details, provide proof of purchase, and set expectations for delivery or service. These emails are typically triggered by an event, rather than being part of a marketing campaign.

This page is one slice of the Nitrosend email library. It holds 471 real emails from 349 brands, all of them collected out of two ordinary inboxes. Nothing here is a mockup.

What 471 of them actually do

Order confirmation emails are a widely sent, yet often overlooked, touchpoint. We collected 471 such emails from 349 distinct brands, showing their ubiquity in post-purchase communication. Many brands default to basic templates, missing a chance to connect further. I believe transactional emails are wasted real estate; they get high open rates and most brands send a default template.

Most order confirmations prioritise function over elaborate design. Over half, 52%, use a utilitarian design style, focusing on clear information without excessive embellishment. Only 1% of emails in our corpus included a hero image, indicating a preference for simplicity over visual flair. In my view, the design of transactional emails should be treated as a brand moment rather than a template.

Clarity and directness define the content of these emails. The median email contains two calls to action, guiding the customer to next steps without overwhelming them. A significant 70% of messages personalise the greeting by addressing the recipient by their first name, making the communication feel more direct.

Simple layouts and neutral tones dominate order confirmation emails. A large majority, 72%, adopt a single column layout, ensuring readability across devices and screen sizes. The tone is predominantly neutral in 59% of emails, reflecting their informational purpose rather than a promotional one.

Subject lines are overwhelmingly direct, reflecting the email's purpose. Almost all, 96%, use a transactional plain subject line, clearly stating the email's intent like 'Your order is confirmed'. Ecommerce brands account for 45% of the emails we collected, highlighting their reliance on these communications for customer reassurance.

None of this helps if the send never lands, which is a promotional email problem rather than a design one.

What to take from these

  • Optimise for clarity: 72% of brands use a single column layout, making information easy to scan.
  • Personalise the greeting: 70% of order confirmations address the recipient by their first name.
  • Keep calls to action focused: The median email has two calls to action, guiding the customer without distraction.
  • Embrace a utilitarian design: Over half, 52%, use a design style that prioritises function over elaborate visuals.
  • Use a direct subject line: 96% of emails use a transactional plain subject line, clearly stating the email's intent.
  • Treat it as a brand moment: Even simple designs can reinforce your brand, as I believe.

Once the shape is right, the rest is the definition.

Questions people ask

The main purpose is to confirm a customer's purchase, provide details of the transaction, and offer reassurance. It serves as a digital receipt and often includes important information like order numbers, shipping estimates, and customer support contacts.

While the primary role is transactional, some brands use this high-open-rate email to subtly introduce other products or services. However, the core focus should remain on the order details to maintain trust and clarity.

Chong, who built our deliverability layer, believes that transactional emails like order confirmations are typically sent via API. This allows for real-time, event-driven delivery directly from a brand's system when a purchase is completed.
