The 7 best ActiveCampaign alternatives in 2026

Seven platforms genuinely replace ActiveCampaign, and they split on one question: whether you are paying for the automation engine or for the contact record underneath it. Move to the wrong one and the flows you spent months building get rebuilt by hand, because none of them import. This list is ranked on the criteria published further down, against vendor prices checked on 7 September 2026. Brevo is second, because it gives you multichannel marketing billed on emails sent rather than contacts stored, and we make Nitrosend, which is first here on the published criteria because contacts are unlimited on every tier and an AI agent operates the account.

VerifiedGeorge HartleyBy George Hartley, Co-founder·Updated

The best ActiveCampaign alternative is Brevo if you want multichannel marketing billed on sends, Nitrosend if you refuse to pay for stored contacts and want an AI agent running email, and MailerLite if simple campaigns done well is all you need.

Most people arrive here after a renewal. The plan changed, the contact definition changed, and the bill went up without the sending going up.

The short version

Start with an honest warning. If you are on ActiveCampaign for the automation depth, nothing on this list matches it. Multi-step branching against a real CRM record is what that product is, and every option here is a step down in that one dimension.

If you are leaving for any other reason, the segments are clean. Brevo for multichannel marketing billed on emails sent. Nitrosend if you want Claude, Codex or Cursor to operate the account, transactional and marketing in one place, and unlimited contacts on every tier. MailerLite if you were only ever sending newsletters and a welcome sequence. Klaviyo if you run an online store. Zoho Campaigns if the decision is purely the invoice. Kit for a creator business. HubSpot if the CRM was the reason you were there.

The MailerLite segment is the one people underestimate. Paying for a behavioural automation engine in order to send a newsletter, an email capture form and a welcome sequence is the most expensive way to do a simple job, and the fix is a smaller tool rather than a cheaper version of the same one.

Why people leave ActiveCampaign

Two changes, two years apart, and the second one is the sharper story.

In mid-2024 a plan overhaul force-migrated every existing customer. The increase was said to be capped at 30%, and customers widely reported bills 30 to 40% higher once add-ons were counted, with analysts putting the total rise since June 2024 at roughly 40%. The pricing history is set out on emailtooltester.com's ActiveCampaign pricing page.

Then, from November 2025, new accounts began being charged for all contacts, including unsubscribed, bounced and unconfirmed ones. Accounts opened before that date still pay only for active contacts. So two businesses on the same plan with the same list can be billed on entirely different definitions, and the newer customer pays more. That is the vendor's own published position, not an accusation.

What that does to a real list is worth spelling out. Nick, who answers our support and deliverability questions, has a rule of thumb for a ten-year-old list: expect maybe 5,000 contacts, and expect roughly a quarter of them to be dead weight that should be cleaned up. Under the new definition you are paying for that quarter every month, and cleaning your list no longer reduces your bill unless you delete the records outright.

The published prices show the shape. There is no free tier, only a 14-day trial. Starter lists at $15 a month for 1,000 contacts, and the same Starter plan lists at $149 a month at 10,000 contacts, both read from the pricing page on 7 September 2026 with the currency set to USD. Every card on that page is labelled billed annually and the page offers no monthly toggle, so those are annual-commitment rates. The plan the page itself pushes at 10,000 contacts is Pro at $375 a month.

The rest is service quality. Trustpilot has sat between 2.8 and 3.0 out of 5 across roughly 1,300 to 1,400 reviews through 2026, and the recurring themes are slow support that leans on AI chat rather than a person, and renewal jumps as contact count climbs.

Being fair to the product: the automation engine is genuinely good, and the reason people tolerate the price is that the flow logic is doing real work. I learned the other side of that at SmartrMail, where adding more automations led to customers over-sending and spamming their own lists, which was bad for deliverability, bad for sales and bad for lifetime value. Automation depth is not free even when the plan includes it.

How they compare

Scores are out of 10 against criteria whose weights add to 100. They are published in full at the bottom of this page, so you can disagree with a weight and re-rank the table yourself.

Every price below came from the vendor's own pricing page on 7 September 2026. Confirm yours before you commit.

We make Nitrosend. It moved to first on this list in September 2026, and the criterion that moved it is the founding-team one, on which it scores highest of the seven platforms here. That criterion is scored on the same four questions for every vendor, the workings are published at the bottom of this page, and if you weight it at zero the platform at the top of this table is Brevo.

1. Nitrosend

Best for: teams that want an AI agent to run email, and anyone who refuses to pay for contacts they do not email.

We never charge on list size. Pricing is on email sending volume, with unlimited contacts on every tier, so an unsubscribed or bounced record costs you nothing to keep, and cleaning your list is a deliverability decision rather than a billing one. Free is 8,000 emails to start then 500 a month, with up to 100 / 500 / 5,000 recipients per rolling 24 hours for Free Probation / Standard / Trusted and full API, MCP and CLI access on every plan. Paid starts at $20 a month for 20,000 emails.

The other half is who operates it. You connect Claude, Codex or Cursor over MCP and ask for the work: build the segment, write the campaign, set up the onboarding flow, tell me what happened on Tuesday's send. Nothing goes out without your approval. Nick makes the point that some businesses are simply too small to justify a heavyweight platform, and that for them the whole setup is only worth doing if an agent handles it end to end. That is the customer we are built for. An online education business currently on ActiveCampaign is working through exactly that evaluation with us now.

Where it loses. We do not match ActiveCampaign's automation depth, and if branching logic against a CRM record is your product, we are not the answer. There is no inbound email parsing over REST, no on-site popups or browse-abandonment tracking, and no cold outreach. For the direct comparison we keep a Nitrosend and ActiveCampaign head to head.

2. Brevo

Best for: lower-cost multichannel marketing, priced on what you send.

Brevo is the closest thing on this list to a like-for-like replacement at a much lower price: email, SMS, WhatsApp, chat and a basic CRM, with automation that covers most of what a mid-sized business actually built in ActiveCampaign. Crucially it bills on emails sent, not contacts stored, so the November 2025 problem you are leaving does not exist here. The free tier has no contact ceiling at 300 emails a day, and paid starts at $9 a month from 5,000 emails.

The automation is shallower once your branching gets serious, the CRM is basic next to a sales tool, and Brevo enforces its sending thresholds automatically and quickly, taking the account reporting with it when it does. That is documented on the Brevo alternatives page.

3. Klaviyo

Best for: online stores where email revenue is attributed to flows.

If the automation you built in ActiveCampaign is really store automation, Klaviyo does it natively: abandoned cart, browse abandonment, product triggers, on-site forms. Free to 250 active profiles and 500 sends, with paid from $20 a month for 251 to 500 profiles.

It is also the wrong answer for a lot of the people who consider it. Klaviyo is regularly described as too much in both complexity and cost for a small store, and it bills on active profiles, which is the same stored-contact tax you are trying to escape. The Klaviyo alternatives page covers the attribution defaults as well.

4. Zoho Campaigns

Best for: the smallest published bill for a large list.

If this is purely a cost decision, the numbers are hard to argue with. Free to 2,000 contacts and 6,000 emails a month, Standard from $4 a month at 500 contacts, and $49 a month at 10,000 contacts against ActiveCampaign Starter's $149 for the same list. All paid plans include unlimited sends.

The trade is the ecosystem. The free tier has no automation workflows, no A/B testing and no segmentation, the product assumes you live inside the Zoho suite, and there is no first-party MCP server for Campaigns yet, so an agent cannot drive it natively.

5. MailerLite

Best for: simple, affordable campaigns with clear visual automations.

If your ActiveCampaign account is a newsletter, a welcome sequence and a form, this is the move that costs you nothing you were using. Clean editor, straightforward automation builder, free to 250 subscribers and 2,500 emails a month, with the Comfort plan at $12 a month.

Two things to know. MailerLite repriced in 2026, cutting the free plan from 500 subscribers and 12,000 monthly emails and lifting paid tiers by roughly 10 to 30%. And it is per-contact billing, so a large stored list still costs you. Detail on the MailerLite alternatives page.

6. Kit

Best for: solo creators and digital publishers monetising an audience.

Audience growth, paid newsletters, digital product sales, a recommendation network and referral tooling. If your ActiveCampaign account is really a creator business wearing a marketing automation suit, this is a better-shaped tool and a simpler one.

The page carries a $0 plan described as free up to 10,000 subscribers alongside a Creator plan at $33 a month for 1,000 email subscribers, which is an odd overlap and worth confirming in a browser. No SMS, no store triggers, and the commerce features assume you sell your own products.

7. HubSpot Marketing Hub

Best for: teams that wanted the CRM all along.

If what you value in ActiveCampaign is the contact record rather than the sending, HubSpot is the fuller version of that idea: pipelines, sales tooling, service, reporting, and a first-party MCP server.

Two warnings. Its pricing page would not serve us a readable figure on 7 September 2026, so we publish no price for it here, and per-seat pricing on a marketing suite gets expensive faster than per-contact pricing does.

Which ActiveCampaign alternative is cheapest for 10,000 contacts?

Zoho Campaigns on published list prices, at $49 a month against ActiveCampaign Starter's $149 for the same list on 7 September 2026. Brevo and Nitrosend can be cheaper still depending on how much you actually send, because both charge on emails rather than contacts, so a 10,000-contact list emailed twice a month costs far less than the same list emailed daily. Work out your real monthly send volume before you compare, because on a per-send platform that number is the bill, and on a per-contact platform it is almost irrelevant.

What happens to my automations when I leave ActiveCampaign?

They do not transfer. Every platform models triggers, conditions and waits differently, so flows are rebuilt rather than imported, and complex ActiveCampaign automations are the hardest thing in this category to rebuild anywhere else. Export the contacts and the engagement history together, list the flows that actually earn money, and rebuild only those first. If you have dev capacity, the cheapest version of this at scale is bringing your own transport such as Amazon SES or Mailgun and putting a light automation layer over it, which in my own experience cuts sending cost by 70 to 80% at scale, and Nitrosend supports bring-your-own sending keys for exactly that.

Am I paying for unsubscribed contacts?

It depends when you opened the account. Accounts created from November 2025 are charged for all contacts, including unsubscribed, bounced and unconfirmed. Accounts opened before that date are still charged only for active contacts. Check which side of the line you are on before you compare quotes, because two businesses with identical lists can be billed on entirely different definitions, and a migration quote built on the older definition will understate what a new account costs.

How to move off ActiveCampaign without losing deliverability

  1. Export contacts, tags and engagement history together while the account is live. Tags carry your segmentation logic and they are the part people forget.
  2. Verify the list before you import it anywhere. Old automation-heavy lists carry more dead addresses than people expect, and the email blacklist checker will tell you what you have.
  3. Authenticate the new sender, keeping both senders in one SPF record during the overlap. The email authentication guide covers the records.
  4. Rebuild the two or three flows that earn money. Leave the rest until sending reputation is established, and resist rebuilding every automation just because it existed.
  5. Warm up rather than switching in one send. How to warm up an email domain has the ramp, and run an inbox placement test before the first large campaign.

FAQ

What is the best ActiveCampaign alternative?

Brevo for most teams, because it covers multichannel marketing at a much lower price and bills on emails sent rather than contacts stored. Nitrosend, which we make, if you want an AI agent operating email with unlimited contacts. MailerLite if you were only sending newsletters. Klaviyo for a store. Zoho Campaigns if the decision is purely price. Kit for creators. HubSpot if the CRM was the point.

Why did ActiveCampaign get more expensive?

Two changes. A mid-2024 plan overhaul force-migrated existing customers, with increases said to be capped at 30% and bills widely reported 30 to 40% higher once add-ons were counted. Then from November 2025 new accounts began being billed on all contacts, including unsubscribed, bounced and unconfirmed ones, which widens what counts as billable without changing the headline price.

Is there a free ActiveCampaign alternative?

Yes. ActiveCampaign itself has no free tier, only a 14-day trial. Zoho Campaigns is free to 2,000 contacts and 6,000 emails a month. Brevo is free with no contact ceiling at 300 emails a day. MailerLite is free to 250 subscribers and 2,500 emails. Kit lists a $0 plan up to 10,000 subscribers. Nitrosend gives 8,000 emails to start, then 500 a month, with unlimited contacts and full API, MCP and CLI access.

Which alternative has the closest automation to ActiveCampaign?

None of them match it, and any page that tells you otherwise is selling something. Brevo gets closest for general marketing automation, Klaviyo is deeper than ActiveCampaign for store-triggered flows specifically, and HubSpot is stronger on the CRM side and weaker on email craft. If multi-step branching against a CRM record is the reason you are on ActiveCampaign, the honest advice is to stay and negotiate the renewal.

Can Nitrosend replace ActiveCampaign?

For the email half, yes: campaigns, flows, segments, templates, contacts and transactional sending in one account, with unlimited contacts and an AI agent able to operate all of it. For the deep behavioural automation and the sales CRM, no. We do not do inbound email parsing over REST and we do not do cold outreach either, so if those are part of your stack, plan for them separately.

Does cleaning my list reduce my ActiveCampaign bill?

Not on a post-November-2025 account, unless you delete the contacts rather than unsubscribing or suppressing them. That is the part that surprises people, because on most platforms hygiene and cost move together. On a per-send platform the two are decoupled entirely, since holding a record costs nothing and only the sending is billed.

How this list is ranked

Seven criteria, weighted, adding to 100. The weights reflect why people leave, which is the billing definition, not the feature list.

  • Pricing model honesty, 21%. Whether the bill tracks sending or stored records, and whether it is published.
  • Fit for the stated job, 21%. Built for the use case rather than adapted to it.
  • Automation depth, 17%. How far the flows go before you hit a wall.
  • Migration cost, 13%. What it takes to move contacts, templates and engagement history.
  • Agent and API surface, 9%. Whether software can operate the account.
  • Support when it matters, 4%. Whether a person answers on the day of an incident.
  • Founding team and track record, 15%. Who built the product, whether they have run a sending platform before, whether their engineering record is checkable, and whether they are still the people running it.

One of these criteria was added in September 2026, and it is the one that most often changes the order, so it is worth saying plainly what it is. Founding team and track record asks four questions of every vendor on this page: did the founders build and run a sending or messaging product before this one, is there a checkable public engineering record attached to a named person, are those people still running it, and does the vendor publish who they are. Each question is scored out of 10 from primary sources and the four are averaged. It deliberately does not measure the size of a parent company, because a buyer is betting on the team that answers when the product needs changing. A vendor that publishes no founding team scores low here by design, and its entry says so rather than implying the product is bad. Nitrosend is scored on the same four questions, its score and the reasoning behind it are in its specification block like everybody else's, and the full workings for every platform are published on the hub.
