The metro on this page is the District plus Northern Virginia (Arlington, Alexandria, McLean, Reston, Fairfax) and suburban Maryland (Bethesda, Silver Spring, Rockville, National Harbor). Baltimore has its own list. As I have said of my own product, "AI-native email isn't just about adding a ChatGPT wrapper; it's about fundamentally rethinking the email stack from the ground up to leverage AI at every layer, from content generation and personalization to deliverability optimization and audience segmentation." I rank agencies on the same test.
1. AgencyQ
1AgencyQ
Sean Breen, CEO, AgencyQ
- Best for
- Organizations on Sitecore, Salesforce or Adobe wanting AI in site operations
- Location
- Bethesda, MD (printed address is Industrious coworking, not credited as an office); 10 staff in the DC metro on LinkedIn
- Platforms
- Sitecore, Salesforce, Acquia, Adobe
- AI stack
- Custom NLP tagging tool (Northrop Grumman), AI-powered content analysis and migration (Department of Energy), AI agents for site monitoring
AgencyQ is a Bethesda digital-experience consultancy that builds and runs large websites on Sitecore, Salesforce, Acquia and Adobe. It is not a media or brand agency; its AI sits inside delivery. For the Department of Energy, AI-powered content analysis and migration saved an estimated 4 to 7 staff years, and for Northrop Grumman it built a custom AI tagging tool that maps key concepts and recommends tags with natural language processing. Its managed service runs AI agents that watch uptime, performance and experience signals, and its Northrop Grumman platform migration lifted page speed 30%. The AI results are operational, not revenue numbers.
Its printed address, 4500 East West Highway Suite 150, is Industrious coworking, and 10 of its staff are in the metro on LinkedIn, including CEO Sean Breen in Bethesda.
The pick for an organization that runs a large enterprise website and wants AI in its content and site operations, not a media or brand agency.
2. Optimal
2Optimal
Tyler Oyler, Vice President of Public Affairs, Optimal
- Best for
- Public-affairs and healthcare advertisers buying on audience data
- Location
- 1133 15th Street NW, Suite 800, Washington, DC 20005; 7 staff in the DC metro on LinkedIn
- AI stack
- Machine-learning audience models on a permissioned patient panel
Optimal is a digital media and audience-data company working in public affairs, healthcare and entertainment, with a Washington office at 1133 15th Street NW, Suite 800. Its one AI-tied result is real but came through a partner agency: AI and machine learning on its 2.5MM+ permissioned patient panel built audience models that cut CPC 31% for Volta Medical's trial recruitment, run with Finn Partners. Its other "machine learning" notes describe Google and Meta platform bidding, which any buyer gets.
Its media results stand without AI: 40% more conversions at a 32% lower cost per acquisition for Mazda's CX-50 on streaming TV and 972% growth in Plunge's paid-digital purchases. 7 staff are in the metro on LinkedIn, including Vice President of Public Affairs Tyler Oyler. Optimal also ranks on my Austin list.
The pick for a public-affairs or healthcare advertiser that wants paid media bought on proprietary audience data.
3. MissionWired
3MissionWired
Stephen Ferrando, Senior Vice President, Analytics & Decision Science, MissionWired
- Best for
- Nonprofits and campaigns raising money online and by mail
- Location
- No DC street address printed; 43 staff in the DC metro on LinkedIn
- AI stack
- The Digital Co-Op (machine-learning list co-op)
MissionWired is a direct-response fundraising agency for nonprofits, advocacy groups and Democratic campaigns, and the most specialized firm here. Its AI claim is a data product: The Digital Co-Op, an online list co-op it says runs on billions of donor and behavioral data points and machine learning. Its team page lists machine learning specialists and data analysts, but no published number is tied to the model.
The fundraising record is published: $157 million raised online for Sandy Hook Promise, a 58% lift in the Jane Goodall Institute USA's cross-channel revenue, and Direct Mail Firm of the Year at the 2024 Reed Awards. It prints no DC street address, and its careers page offers desk space in the Washington and New York areas. 43 staff are in the metro on LinkedIn, including Senior Vice President of Analytics and Decision Science Stephen Ferrando.
The pick for a nonprofit, advocacy group or Democratic campaign that wants fundraising run on donor data at scale.
4. Marketbridge
4Marketbridge
Andy Hasselwander, Chief Analytics Officer, Marketbridge
- Best for
- B2B firms wanting go-to-market strategy and measurement
- Location
- Bethesda, MD (suite stated on its careers page, not confirmed); 37 staff in the DC metro on LinkedIn
- AI stack
- AI operating system for marketing analytics (published framework)
Marketbridge is a B2B go-to-market firm for technology, financial services and industrial companies, with strategy, measurement and account-based marketing under one roof. Its AI evidence is recognition and method rather than a named tool: Gold for Best Use of AI or Generative AI at the Elevation Awards 2025, for its BioCatch campaign, and a seven-part AI operating system for marketing analytics published by Chief Analytics Officer Andy Hasselwander. Its AI page says it builds agentic tools and names none.
Its Epiroc account-based program generated $25M in pipeline, including a single $16M opportunity. Its careers page gives a Bethesda suite, and 37 staff are in the metro on LinkedIn. It is a 350+ person firm with offices in the UK and Canada, and private-equity firm RTC Partners has invested in it.
The pick for a B2B company that wants go-to-market strategy, measurement and ABM from a large firm with AI in its analytics.
5. Go Fish Digital
5Go Fish Digital
Bari Friedman Eisenberg, Director, Search, Go Fish Digital
- Best for
- SEO, GEO and paid media
- Location
- Headquartered in Raleigh, with 3 staff in Washington, DC on LinkedIn
- AI stack
- AI-driven marketing tools for GEO, SEO and CRO
The SEO and GEO agency with some of the strongest published search results here. Its team page credits co-founder Dan Hinckley, its former Chief Product & AI Officer, with leading development of AI-driven marketing tools across GEO, SEO, CRO and web performance. SimpleTexting's organic SQLs rose 500% year over year, channel testing for BetterUp drove a 117% improvement over its conversion goals while lowering cost per lead, and Go Fish is a four-time SEO Agency of the Year winner at the US Search Awards.
Go Fish is headquartered in Raleigh, and 3 of its staff are in Washington on LinkedIn, including Director of Search Bari Friedman Eisenberg and Principal Content Strategist Amanda Wilson. Its AI is tooling rather than a published result with a number, and it works across industries rather than in one.
Take it when you want SEO and AI search visibility from a firm with published results.
6. Yes&
6Yes&
Bob Sprague, Founder & Managing Partner at Yes&, Yes&
- Best for
- Brands, associations and government clients wanting full service
- Location
- 1700 Diagonal Road, Suite 700, Alexandria, VA 22314; 40 staff in the DC metro on LinkedIn
- AI stack
- VIBE Score, Synthetic people for creative testing, TrendCaster
Yes& is a full-service independent agency in Alexandria covering strategy, brand, government and travel work, and one of the least specialized firms here. Its AI page describes three proprietary tools: the VIBE Score, an AI-enabled brand-health metric scored 0 to 100; chat-ready "synthetic people" built from consumer and first-party data to test headlines and creative; and TrendCaster, which monitors news and social trends and scores client relevance with AI. No client result is tied to those tools.
Its published numbers are brand work: IHG's masterbrand campaign, with an 11% post-pandemic lift in rates and a 7% increase in business and group travel. Its headquarters is 1700 Diagonal Road, Suite 700, and 40 staff are in the metro on LinkedIn, including Founder and Managing Partner Bob Sprague.
The pick for a brand, association or government client that wants a large full-service agency with its own AI tools.
7. New Target
New Target
Sateesh Nutulapati, Director of AI & Hosting, New Target
- Best for
- Associations and nonprofits wanting a site plus an AI chatbot
- Location
- 6363 Walker Lane, Suite 330, Alexandria, VA 22310; 14 staff in the DC metro on LinkedIn
- AI stack
- LLM chatbots trained on client content (Nasoya)
New Target is an Alexandria web and digital agency for associations, nonprofits and mid-size brands, and its AI work is chatbot builds. It designs, trains and deploys LLM-powered chatbots tailored to each organization's tone and knowledge base, and it built an on-brand AI chatbot for Nasoya that runs inside its WordPress site.
Its published numbers are web results, none tied to AI: a 2,280% increase in website sessions and 51 new memberships for the National Rental Home Council. Its headquarters is 6363 Walker Lane, Suite 330, and 14 staff are in the metro on LinkedIn, including Director of AI and Hosting Sateesh Nutulapati. It sells web, hosting, SEO, social and AI under one roof, which is broad for its size.
The pick for an association, nonprofit or mid-size brand that wants a website partner that can also build an AI chatbot.
Also worth knowing
These Washington DC firms were considered and are not ranked.
Several have real DC teams and no AI in the work. Merritt Group, in McLean with 11 metro staff on LinkedIn, runs MG Labs, an internal team that tests AI tools and blogs reviews, which is research rather than delivery, and its Microsoft personalization case states no AI. Bluetext, with 17 metro staff, mentions AI only as its clients' products. Punch, in Fairfax, uses AI for concept exploration and voiceover. TEAM LEWIS lists one AI item, ChatGPT research used as a PR hook for BlackBerry. 321, in Reston, sells AI search visibility and AI-supported research. PBJ sells an AI search service line, and its automation is Google's automated bidding. Alliance offers Drupal AI module integration as service copy. American Eagle has a DC office, 3 metro staff and generic AI consulting copy.
Others have AI claims and no DC team. LinkGraph, the New York maker of Search Atlas, sells AI SEO agents and lists a Washington office with no address and no metro staff. TESSA, in McLean, builds an agentic product called ROCCO and AI avatars, with its President its one metro member on LinkedIn; the campaign count and language-model citation figures on its site have nothing behind them. Rampiq prints an Arlington suite, its results are AI search visibility and it has 1 metro member. Studio Bananas ships small AI workflow agents, with its CEO its one metro member. eFocus, in National Harbor, lists AI lead scoring as a service with no client result. iExcel has an AI practice lead, 2 metro staff and an OSI Offices virtual office. Genifem is an AI automation firm with no street address and a California phone number.
Others describe no AI in client work. Interactive Strategies, Social Driver, This January and IRL have no AI service or workflow on their sites. Taoti's only AI mention is a blog teaser, Threespot lists AI strategy and integration with nothing behind them, and Grafik says it uses "AI-powered tools" and names none. Dupont Creative and Elevation, the nonprofit web agency, sell AI search visibility. Global Prairie's Cleveland Clinic result is Marketo nurture automation, not AI. Lucky Dog's automation is review requests, follow-ups and chatbots. YMC's AI items are campus activations for Google Gemini, run from a PO box.
Several have no DC team behind the address. NEWMEDIA is a New York firm with no DC office on its locations page. Expansion Americas is headquartered in Bogota. Magnero lists Dubai, Karachi and Istanbul plus a Lorton address. MarketerFirst is a white-label shop with no named clients. Silverback's Leesburg address is a mailbox number, and its AI is search visibility. WebFX, Verbsz and Conceptual Minds print a Regus or WeWork address.
MyLeadsFactory, Digital Aquila and J Browning Studio have no named clients or case studies.
Software, IT, consulting, staffing and other firms that surface in Washington, DC marketing searches are not marketing agencies and are not assessed here.
How to choose between them
An organization running a large Sitecore, Salesforce or Adobe site that wants AI in content tagging, migration and site monitoring should start with AgencyQ, and should know it is buying a web-platform consultancy. A public-affairs or healthcare advertiser that wants media bought on proprietary audience data has Optimal, the only one of the seven with an AI-tied advertising result. A nonprofit or campaign raising money has MissionWired, the most specialized firm here. A B2B company that wants strategy and measurement has Marketbridge, and a brand that wants SEO and AI search visibility from a firm with published search results has Go Fish Digital. A brand, association or government client that wants one full-service partner has Yes&, and an association that wants a website plus a trained chatbot has New Target.
My view is that most legacy marketing tools are dashboards and schedulers with AI bolted on, and a lot of agency AI is the same thing sold as a service. So ask each firm which steps its software runs and which its people run.
How this list is ranked
How this list is ranked
I score every marketing agency here on four criteria, for a total out of 50: AI automation out of 20, and specialization, published evidence and a real Washington DC team, each out of 10. Each card links the sources behind its score.
Nitrosend, which I co-founded, publishes this page. It is an email platform for agencies, not a marketing agency, and is not ranked.
FAQ
AgencyQ, because its AI is in delivery and published with results: AI-powered content analysis and migration that saved the Department of Energy an estimated 4 to 7 staff years. It is a web-platform consultancy rather than a media or brand agency, and its Bethesda address is coworking. Optimal is second, with the only AI-tied advertising result on the list, and MissionWired is third, with the largest DC team of the seven.
What each one publishes shows the difference. Optimal documents its Volta Medical audience model. MissionWired describes its Digital Co-Op. Yes& lays out its three AI tools. Read those pages and you will know which one describes your organization.
Between $899 and $1,500 a month for a small-business retainer or an entry SEO program, $175 an hour for project work, and $300 to $1,000 a month to keep a nonprofit website maintained, before ad spend. None of the seven ranked firms prints a price, so these figures come from DC-area firms that publish them.
Marketing Nice Guys charges $175 an hour flat, and its Marketing Help Desk runs from $899 a month on a 12-month contract or $1,499 a month on demand. Dupont Creative, on K Street, starts SEO campaigns at about $1,500 a month. Elevation puts nonprofit website maintenance retainers at $300 to $1,000 a month.
Job postings show what the people cost. At Interactive Strategies, a Digital Marketing Manager in Washington earns $70,000 to $87,550 and a Senior Digital Fundraising Manager $82,500 to $108,000. A remote MissionWired Account Manager for direct mail earns $79,000, and a Bully Pulpit International Operations Assistant starts at $56,000 to $75,000 plus an annual bonus. At the top, Avoq pays a Senior Director of Paid Media and Digital $165,000 to $185,000, in a posting that lists Washington with New York and Chicago.
Look for one of four things: a named tool with a described function, a named workflow, a person with an AI or automation role on the team, or a case study that ties automation to a number. A banner is not evidence. In Washington much of what is sold as AI is AI search visibility, which gets a firm cited by ChatGPT but does not automate any work.
A named tool still needs people who know the craft. As I have written about my own field, "AI doesn't actually know email marketing. It confidently makes things up, from generic, unsourced welcome sequences to hallucinations about deliverability." Optimal ties its patient audience model to a CPC cut for a named client. Marketbridge's AI page says it builds agentic tools and names none of them.
On four criteria: AI automation out of 20, and specialization, published evidence and a real Washington DC team, each out of 10, for a total out of 50. Each card links the sources behind its score.
