Marketing is expensive because most agencies still do the mechanical half by hand. The Portland firms worth paying have handed that half to software. They run internal AI agents built on the Anthropic API, Voice AI that qualifies inbound calls straight into the CRM and brand tooling that turns a brand into an operating system, and they keep people on judgment. The only AI results tied to a named client and a number are in AI search, from SEO Growth Partners and Good & Gold. Nitrosend publishes this page and is not ranked.

- Location

- AI stack
- AI brand tooling, Automated content production systems
The Portland-headquartered digital agency that builds AI into the brand itself. Its brand practice builds custom tools and AI workflows that turn a brand into an operating system, and AI-ready brand systems designed for agentic experiences. Its content production systems use automated tools and templates to generate content for different audiences and global markets. At Bluethumb we built tools that auto-generate share tiles with an artist's work and our brand, and I have said it became "an amazing acquisition engine, especially by automating it". Brand tooling is that idea at scale.
Named clients include Nike and Google, and its Oura Ring work won Gold for Marketing Strategy in Consumer Tech in 2025. The headquarters is at 2035 NW Front Ave, Suite 600, with 125 staff in the Portland area, including Executive Director of Strategic Growth Garett Stenson. No AI result with a number is published.
Take it when the brief is a brand system that has to scale.
2. Ad-Apt
Ad-Apt
Lucas Sommer, Chief Executive Officer, Ad-Apt
- Best for
- Paid media plus AI agent builds
- Location
- 252 A Ave, Suite 200, Lake Oswego (headquarters)
- AI stack
- Anthropic API, Carcin
The Lake Oswego agency whose own delivery runs on agents. Its internal AI agents draft content, enrich leads, answer internal questions, generate reports and flag anomalies in performance data, all built on the Anthropic API. It builds the same for clients, with Carcin, its productized AI agent operator that installs and runs the agents, as its public proof, and its Director of Engineering, Chase Bradley-West, is the third engineer on its AI delivery stack. I have written that I expected "agents doing most of my work by 2026". Ad-Apt already works that way.
Its Teton Gravity Research case reports 576% sales at a 7.2 ROAS, a paid-media result rather than an AI one. The office is at 252 A Ave, Suite 200, in Lake Oswego, led by CEO Lucas Sommer. The team is small, so expect the founders on the account.
Take it when you want the agency that runs on agents to build yours.
3. City Ranked
City Ranked
Duane Baumgartner, Founder and CEO, City Ranked
- Best for
- Service-area businesses
- Location
- 17800 SE Mill Plain Blvd, Suite 190, Vancouver, Washington (headquarters)
- AI stack
- Skout, Skout IVR (Voice AI)
The Vancouver, Washington agency that built its own AI intake layer. Skout IVR routes new prospects to Voice AI and lands them in the client's CRM as a documented MQL, and Skout sits between the advertising and the CRM, qualifying each inbound contact against MQL criteria. City Ranked calls Skout the AI-powered platform its marketing automation runs on, and says it has over 40 full-time team members. The Skout page publishes 37% to 60%+ MQL capture and an 85% Voice AI parse rate, with no client named.
The headquarters is at 17800 SE Mill Plain Blvd, Suite 190, across the Columbia River from Portland, led by founder and CEO Duane Baumgartner. It is built for home-service and other service-area businesses, and its case studies carry few numbers. Take it when missed calls are costing you leads.

4. Brandwoven
Brandwoven
Paul Weinert, Chairman of the Board and Co-Founder, Brandwoven
- Best for
- Amazon and Walmart sellers
- Location
- 107 SE Washington St, Suite 700, Portland (headquarters)
- Platforms
- Amazon, Walmart
The Portland marketplace agency that optimizes for AI shopping assistants. It optimizes brands' presence on Amazon Rufus, Walmart Sparky and other LLM shopping assistants, and its team combines AI tools with human review to adjust bid tactics for efficient spend. My view is that ecommerce is a great leveler, where the constraints are imagination and the determination to learn, and the shelf is now partly a chatbot.
The results are marketplace results: Zebco's Amazon revenue rose 32% year over year. Brandwoven is headquartered in Portland with its team spread across the country, at 107 SE Washington St, Suite 700, with 9 staff in the Portland area, including co-founder and chairman Paul Weinert. No AI-tied result is published. Take it when Amazon and Walmart are your store.

5. SEO Growth Partners
5SEO Growth Partners
Joey Randazzo, CEO, SEO Growth Partners
- Best for
- Local SEO, ChatGPT visibility and Google Ads
- Location
- Based in Portland, with 3 staff located in the Portland area on LinkedIn
A Portland SEO and Google Ads agency for local and service businesses whose AI work is visibility in ChatGPT, backed by named clients. Apex East Roofing got 6 new roofing clients through ChatGPT in 2 months, the wedding venue Twenty Mile House draws consistent qualified leads from ChatGPT, and for Peggy Hoag Real Estate it applied citation practices for LLMs, and the brokerage now gets inbound leads from buyers and sellers who find it there. That is AI search as a channel, not automation of the work.
Elite Home Exteriors went from 200 organic visitors to 61,342, and it says its average client spends $1,600 a month. 3 of its staff are in the Portland area on LinkedIn, including CEO Joey Randazzo and Director of Google Ads Dharna Vemuru.
The pick for a local business that wants to show up when customers ask ChatGPT, with Google Ads alongside.
6. Intuitive Digital
Intuitive Digital
Nick Footer, CEO, Intuitive Digital

- SEO, paid and content

- 1661 SE 3rd Ave, #D203, Portland
- AI stack
- Custom GPTs
The Portland agency that publishes how it uses AI. Custom AI systems and GPTs handle analysis and production, AI produces the monthly content and a copywriter refines it, and its AI disclaimer names where AI helps: brainstorming, outlining, summarizing research and rough first drafts. My view is that most marketing email I see is slop, so the copywriter pass is the part worth paying for.
For Jacobs Heating it raised online visibility 686% and the site conversion rate to over 7%, while cutting cost per conversion by 25%. The office is at 1661 SE 3rd Ave, #D203, with 8 staff in the Portland area, including CEO Nick Footer and Vice President of Partner Services Alysha Schultz. It runs a full-service menu, and none of its published results is tied to AI.
Take it when you want AI-assisted content with a copywriter on every piece.
7. Good & Gold
7Good & Gold
Carrie Hinton Ritchie, Founder, Good & Gold
- Best for
- Lifestyle brands: search, paid media and email
- Location
- Based in Portland, with 3 staff located in the Portland area on LinkedIn
A Portland marketing and design agency for lifestyle brands, running SEO, paid media, email and SMS, and websites. It has been acquired by Graybox and still trades under its own name. Its AI result is in search: for CHANI, 200+ pages now appear in 3k+ AI Overviews, alongside an 8,177% increase in organic clicks. Its automations are email flows rather than AI, and they lifted Zupan's automation-attributed revenue 78% year over year.
Oregon Fruit Company's Meta ads returned a 1,426% ROAS. 3 of its staff are in the Portland area on LinkedIn, including founder Carrie Hinton Ritchie and senior designer Maggie Burns.
The pick for a consumer lifestyle brand that wants search, paid media and email from one design-led team.
8. Gravitate
Gravitate
Don Elliott, President, Gravitate
- Best for
- Websites and AI search
- Location
- 911 Main Street, Suite 200, Vancouver, Washington
The Vancouver, Washington web agency that uses AI across the page build. Its AI SEO team uses AI to research queries, plan strategy, audit pages for visibility, build outlines, write content and code page elements, aimed at AI search as well as Google.
The results are website results. Rafay Systems saw a 10x increase in web traffic and a 73% reduction in cost per lead, and BedMart an 18% increase in checkout conversions, and none of those is tied to AI. The office is at 911 Main Street, Suite 200, in Vancouver, with 13 staff in the Portland area, including President Don Elliott and Director of Client Solutions Lukas Leary. It suits mid-market B2B and consumer companies whose main project is a custom website, with SEO and AI-search work built in from the start. Take it when the website is the project.

9. Obility
Obility
Mike Nierengarten, CMO and Founder, Obility
- Best for
- B2B tech and SaaS
- Location
- Portland area
The Portland B2B specialist for tech and SaaS companies. Its generative engine optimization practice reports that ServicePower's presence in AI engines increased significantly, quarter over quarter, though it publishes no number for it. On paid social, a Snowflake campaign with different assets and audiences increased MQLs by 105%. My view is that channels change, so a paid channel that failed a year ago is worth retesting, and a B2B specialist knows which ones to retest.
The team has 11 staff in the Portland area. Its SEO/GEO Strategy and Execution Director is Jamie Backlund, alongside founder and CMO Mike Nierengarten and Director of Data and Paid Media John O'Toole. Take it when you sell B2B software and want paid media and AI search under one roof.

10. FINN Partners

- Best for
- PR and communications
- Location
- 100 SW Main Street, Suite 1275, Portland (office)
- AI stack
- Google Gemini, ChatGPT, Claude, NotebookLM, Adobe Firefly
The global PR agency with a Portland office and a packaged AI program. SAIL is its phased AI integration service for marketing and communications teams, covering audits, roadmaps, training and custom deployments, and its teams work in Google Gemini, ChatGPT, Claude, NotebookLM and Adobe Firefly. For one client it built a model trained on the client's research and brand voice, and it names neither that client nor a result.
For Epic Games it earned 700+ pieces of coverage across Southeast Asia, and its Jamaica work drew 2.5 million-plus video views. The Portland office is at 100 SW Main Street, Suite 1275, with 38 staff in the Portland area, led by Managing Partner Shannon Brewer Riggs. Portland is one office of a global network, and its services run from PR to advertising.

11. Webfor
Webfor
Kevin Getch, Founder and Director of Digital Strategy, Webfor
- Best for
- SEO, paid and AI search
- Location
- 1111 Main St, Suite 201A, Vancouver, Washington (headquarters)
The Vancouver, Washington agency with a named AI practice, Ingenuity AI. Its human-AI content process pairs LLMs with writers and editors who keep tone, facts and strategy on track, and its AI-assisted audits scan for readability, topic depth and semantic gaps. A separate Ingenuity AI service optimizes clients for AI search. Both pages describe methods rather than results.
Casey Grace Studios' sales rose 93%. The headquarters is at 1111 Main St, Suite 201A, in Vancouver, with 13 staff in the Portland area, including founder Kevin Getch and President and Creative Director Jason Wright. It runs SEO, paid, web and AI search for small and mid-sized businesses. Take it when you want AI search optimization from a Portland-area team that also builds the site.

12. Avenue
Avenue
Anna Madill, CEO, Avenue
- Best for
- Nonprofits and purpose-driven brands
- Location
- Portland
The Portland agency for purpose-driven brands, with a published AI manifesto. Its manifesto says AI automates repetitive tasks such as formatting, drafting and organizing information, speeds up data analysis and supports creative ideation, and its generative engine optimization service aims to get brands referenced by ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Gemini and Perplexity.
Named clients include Oregon Humane Society, Portland Art Museum and Khan Academy. The team of 6 in Portland is led by CEO Anna Madill with Associate Director of Strategy and Innovation Megan Kenealy. Its AI evidence describes internal use rather than a client result, and it publishes no numbered case studies. Take it when the client is a nonprofit, a cultural institution or a mission-driven brand that wants to be found in AI answers.

Also worth knowing
These firms were considered and are not ranked.
Several have real AI work and too small a team in the Portland area. The Nine is based in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, with one person in Portland. RevenueZen, Lithium and WebRanking have one or two people here, and Diviner is a solo consultant. Thrive is based in Arlington, Texas, EnlightWorks in Benicia, California and eSEOspace in Roseville, California.
Matyx, Cremicro, Web Upon, XO, Fab Brands, BluPrint PR, Upswept, Neon Moth, LawSEO, Sochtek and Synapse list only a mailbox, virtual-office or coworking address, with no Portland office. Software, IT, consulting and staffing firms that surface in Portland marketing searches are not marketing agencies and are not assessed here.
How to choose between them
If the job is a brand system that has to run across markets, start with Instrument. If you want an agency that runs its own delivery on AI agents and will build yours, Ad-Apt is the pick. Service-area businesses losing calls belong with City Ranked, and brands selling on Amazon and Walmart with Brandwoven. B2B software companies should talk to Obility. For a website rebuild, Gravitate and Webfor are across the river in Vancouver. Mission-driven brands and nonprofits fit Avenue and Intuitive Digital, and FINN Partners brings a global PR network. Local businesses that want to be recommended in ChatGPT should talk to SEO Growth Partners, and lifestyle brands that want search, paid media and email from one team fit Good & Gold. My view is that founder-led video should beat agency video on click-through, so keep your founder on camera whichever firm you hire.
My view is that most startups run marketing with one developer and one marketer. Pick the one channel neither of them can run, then pick the agency strongest at it.
How this list is ranked
How this list is ranked
I score every marketing agency here on four criteria, for a total out of 50: AI automation out of 20, and specialization, published evidence and a real Portland team, each out of 10. Each card links the sources behind its score.
Nitrosend, which I co-founded, publishes this page. It is an email platform for agencies, not a marketing agency, and is not ranked.
FAQ
Instrument, if you are picking one name with no other constraint, because it is headquartered in Portland, has the largest local team on this list and builds AI tooling into brand systems for clients such as Nike and Google. Ad-Apt is the pick when you want AI agents running the delivery itself. From there the shortlist splits by need: City Ranked for service-area businesses, Brandwoven for Amazon and Walmart, and Obility for B2B software.
The difference shows in what each one publishes. Ad-Apt lists the agents it runs on the Anthropic API. City Ranked documents how Skout routes calls into the CRM. Instrument describes its brand tooling. Read those three pages and you will know which of them describes your problem.
Between $850 and $15,000 a month on retainer. Small-business SEO plans start at $825 to $1,500 a month, full B2B programs run $8,000 to $15,000 a month, and hourly rates run $130 to $200. The range comes from Portland firms that publish their prices.
RevenueZen publishes startup SEO retainers of $1,500 to $3,000 a month for a foundation, $3,000 to $7,000 for lean programs and $8,000 to $15,000 for full programs. Diviner charges $130 an hour and says most Portland agencies bill $130 to $200. SEO Growth Partners says its average client spends $1,600 a month and its average Portland-based client about $850. Greg Beddor publishes SEO plans at $825 and $1,225 a month, and Oregon Web Solutions starts at $1,500 a month. Decoder Digital puts paid search at $2,000 to $4,000 a month per channel, and Murmur Creative's minimum engagement is usually $15,000.
The number to check a quote against is the in-house cost. Remote postings that list Portland pay a Junior Media Buyer $50,000 to $80,500 and a Senior Media Buyer $70,000 to $80,000, and Sproutbox pays a freelance web developer $30 to $50 an hour. Those salaries are before benefits, tools and management time.
The ad spend, and often the software. A retainer buys people and their hours, and the media budget sits on top. Management fees can scale with that budget: Logical Position charges $749 a month on $800 to $2,999 of paid-social spend, $999 on $3,000 to $9,999, and 10% of spend from $10,000. AI work adds its own lines, because a custom agent or an integration is a build plus a monthly fee, and model usage is billed to someone.
Ask who owns the accounts. The ad accounts, the analytics property, the CRM and the email platform should be in your name, so the history stays with you if the agency changes.
Look for one of four things: a named tool with a described function, a named workflow, a person with an AI or automation role on the team, or a case study that ties automation to a number. A banner is not evidence.
Every AI point on this page links to one of those. Ad-Apt names the Anthropic API behind its internal agents. City Ranked describes what Skout does between the ad and the CRM. Ad-Apt's about page names the engineers on its AI delivery stack.
On four criteria: AI automation out of 20, and specialization, published evidence and a real Portland-area team, each out of 10, for a total out of 50. The Portland area includes Beaverton, Lake Oswego and Vancouver, Washington. Each card links the sources behind its score.
