What b2b emails are

B2B email refers to marketing and communication messages sent from one business to another. These emails typically focus on lead generation, nurturing, customer retention, and sharing industry insights. Unlike B2C emails, B2B communications often address specific business challenges and offer solutions.

This page is one slice of the Nitrosend email library. It holds 2,427 real emails from 873 brands, all of them collected out of two ordinary inboxes. Nothing here is a mockup.

What 2,427 of them actually do

B2B emails favour clear, functional design over visual flair. Most emails are text heavy, with 76% falling into this category. The majority also use a monochrome colour palette, seen in 72% of collected emails. This suggests a focus on conveying information efficiently rather than creating visually complex experiences.

The primary goal of B2B emails is instruction and information sharing. A significant 64% of emails adopt an instructional tone, aiming to educate recipients. This aligns with the common email types, where newsletters make up 24% of the collected emails, demonstrating a consistent effort to provide value. As a B2B company, we do a lot of partnership stuff to grow how we collect email addresses. We pair up with similar apps, people in the space, or platforms to do content or run contests together and collect emails that way.

B2B emails typically offer multiple clear next steps, but personalisation is not universal. The median B2B email contains two calls to action, guiding recipients toward further engagement. Despite this, only 38% of emails address the recipient by their first name, suggesting room for more direct personalisation.

Subject lines prioritise clarity, and retention is a key focus. Over half of all subject lines, 51%, are descriptive, directly stating the email's content. This approach helps cut through an "already-saturated prospect inbox", as our internal analysis highlights. We also see a strong emphasis on existing customers, with 40% of emails targeting the retention lifecycle stage.

Many B2B brands, particularly those in SaaS (59%) and professional services (22%), tend to stick to simple layouts. Single column layouts are used in 55% of emails, while 44% are plain text. Nick, who runs our customer support, suggests that targeting verticals with clear use-cases and examples could be more effective than broad cold outreach.

None of this helps if the send never lands, which is a getting the thing delivered problem rather than a design one.
