What beauty emails are

Beauty emails are marketing or transactional messages sent by brands in the cosmetics, skincare, hair care, and fragrance industries. They often feature product promotions, appointment reminders, or brand storytelling. Our analysis shows what real beauty brands send to their customers.

This page is one slice of the Nitrosend email library. It holds 164 real emails from 37 brands, all of them collected out of two ordinary inboxes. Nothing here is a mockup.

What 164 of them actually do

The beauty industry prioritises existing customer relationships in its email strategy. We found 45% of emails are for fulfilment and 40% target retention, meaning most messages serve customers already in the funnel. Only 4% of emails are geared towards acquisition.

Appointment-related emails are a major component of beauty brand communications. They account for 32% of all emails collected, making them the largest single email type in this segment. Promotional emails, at 17%, are a distant second.

Simplicity in design and layout is common among beauty brands. Almost half of the emails we collected, 49%, use a minimal design style, while a large majority, 77%, opt for a single-column layout. I like how brands like Fable & Mane use this clean approach to focus on brand story and social engagement, even without a heavy reliance on hero images. This suggests a preference for uncluttered communication.

Despite the visual nature of the industry, hero images are not universally present. Only 24% of emails include a hero image, and product grids are used in just 8% of messages. This indicates brands are not always leading with large visuals or extensive product displays.

The overall tone of beauty emails is generally approachable. We found 35% use a neutral tone and 29% are warm, suggesting brands aim for a friendly, informative voice. Instructional tones account for 15% of emails.

Personalisation, while often discussed, is not universally adopted in the beauty sector. Just under half of the emails, 49%, address the recipient by their first name. This suggests an opportunity for brands to connect more directly with their audience.

Subject lines in this segment often lean transactional or promotional. We found 51% are transactional plain, focusing on direct actions or information. Another 21% are promotional discount, clearly advertising offers. This indicates a very direct approach to capturing attention in the inbox.

None of this helps if the send never lands, which is a promotional email problem rather than a design one.

What to take from these

  • Focus on existing customer journeys; most beauty brands prioritise fulfilment and retention.
  • Make appointment reminders clear and easy to action; they are the most common email type.
  • Embrace minimal design. Nearly half of the emails we collected use this style.
  • Use a single-column layout. It is the dominant choice, appearing in 77% of messages.
  • Maintain a neutral or warm tone. Brands like Adore Beauty often use this to build rapport.
  • Personalise your subject lines or body copy; 49% of brands address recipients by first name.

Once the shape is right, the rest is the definition.
