What travel promotional emails are

Travel promotional emails are marketing communications sent by travel companies to encourage bookings, promote destinations, or offer deals. They typically feature holiday packages, flight discounts, or unique travel experiences. These emails aim to drive immediate action by highlighting value and urgency.

This page is one slice of the Nitrosend email library. It holds 128 real emails from 45 brands, all of them collected out of two ordinary inboxes. Nothing here is a mockup.

What 128 of them actually do

Travel brands often include multiple calls to action in their promotional emails. Our collection of 128 emails shows a median of four calls to action per email. Only 23% of these emails contained just one call to action, indicating a preference for giving recipients several options or pathways to explore. I recall a Nitrosend campaign for a 'plastic-free travel range' where 50 recipients were not emailed due to a delivery issue, highlighting that even the best content needs reliable delivery.

Visual elements are common, but product grids are rare in these travel promotions. Almost half, 41%, of the collected emails carried a hero image, suggesting a strong reliance on aspirational photography to capture attention. However, none of the 128 emails used a data table, and only 14% incorporated a product grid, pointing to a less structured approach to showcasing multiple offers in a single view.

Most travel promotional emails favour a clean, single column layout with practical design. A significant 80% of emails used a single column layout, making them easy to read on any device. The most common design styles were utilitarian at 25% and corporate at 24%, showing a focus on clear communication over elaborate aesthetics.

Travel brands lean towards warm and instructional tones, but personalisation is not widespread. A quarter of the emails, 25%, adopted a warm tone, aiming to build rapport with the recipient. Another 19% were instructional, guiding the reader through offers or booking steps. Despite this, only 25% of the emails addressed the recipient by their first name, suggesting an opportunity for more direct engagement.

Subject lines heavily feature promotional discounts, while the emails primarily target retention. Promotional discount subject lines made up 34% of the collection, clearly signalling price as a key driver for engagement. Most of these emails, 76%, were aimed at customer retention, indicating that brands frequently use promotions to keep existing travellers engaged rather than focusing solely on new acquisition.

None of this helps if the send never lands, which is a email marketing problem rather than a design one.

What to take from these

  • Adopt a single column layout for optimal mobile readability.
  • Use a hero image to capture attention; 41% of emails in our corpus included one.
  • Offer multiple pathways for action; the median number of calls to action in this segment was four.
  • Consider a utilitarian or corporate design style to maintain clarity and professionalism.
  • Lead with a promotional discount in your subject line to signal value upfront.
  • Personalise your greetings; many brands skip addressing recipients by name.

Once the shape is right, the rest is getting the thing delivered.

Questions people ask

Travel promotional emails vary in length. Our data shows a fairly even distribution, with 33% being short, 32% long, and 28% medium. This suggests there is no single dominant length for these communications.

The most common subject line style in this segment is promotional discount, accounting for 34% of emails. Descriptive subject lines follow at 22%, and emoji-led subject lines are also popular at 19%.

While some personalisation occurs, it is not universal. Only 25% of the collected travel promotional emails addressed the recipient by their first name. This indicates a potential area for brands to deepen engagement with their audience.
