What a Christmas email is
A Christmas email is one a brand sends for the Christmas season: the sale, the last day to order for delivery, the gift guide, the closing dates, or a thank-you to customers at the end of the year. It is usually warmer than the rest of the year's email, and that is why it works.
We collected 93 Christmas emails from 76 brands in two ordinary inboxes, between 2016 and 2025. This page shows 62 of them, from 60 brands.1
Browse all 62 Christmas emails
Filter by what the email is doing, or search a brand or subject line. Open any one to see it full length, with its subject line, notes on what it does, and a prompt that rebuilds it in your own brand. The grid opens with one of each kind.

Christmas email examples by type
What the 93 Christmas emails are doing
sorted by hand from the subject line, send date and the email itself| Type | Emails | Share | One to open |
|---|---|---|---|
| Christmas sale or offer | 29 | 31% | Kogan.com, 2024: "Christmas Sale ends tonight β° Komodo Inflatable Kayak ONLY $79.99 (70% OFF standard retail price)" |
| Season's greetings and thank-yous | 19 | 20% | The Indigo Project, 2019: "Our honest wishes for you, for Christmas and beyond...Β π" |
| Delivery cut-offs and closing dates | 13 | 14% | Bedhead Hats, 2024: "π Important: Christmas Closure & Shipping Cut-Off Dates!" |
| Gift guides and gift cards | 13 | 14% | Art Gallery of NSW, 2025: "π Christmas gift guide" |
| Newsletters with a Christmas theme | 10 | 11% | Scripted, 2017: "Merry Scripted's Newsletter, Everyone!" |
| Countdowns, parties and bookings | 9 | 10% | Pit Viper Australia, 2025: "12 DAYS OF TURBO IS BACK" |
A Christmas campaign is more than a sale. 29 of the 93, 31%, are a sale or an offer. The rest are greetings, delivery deadlines, gift ideas and events, and those are the ones that read as written for Christmas rather than for any sale.
Christmas sale emails and delivery cut-offs
The most useful Christmas sales email tells the reader the last day to order. 13 of the 93 are about delivery cut-offs, closing dates or opening hours. Bedhead Hats' email is almost all deadline: one box for standard shipping, one for express, then when the warehouse closes and reopens. The T-Shirt Co put its order deadlines in a table, by product and shipping method. Booktopia's subject line was the deadline itself, "FINAL CALL: Order by 11.59pm tonight for Christmas delivery." A date is a reason to buy now that does not need a discount, and it is information the reader wants.
The sales themselves are quieter than on Black Friday. Kogan.com ran "Christmas Sale ends tonight" with one product and its price in the subject line, and BOOST LAB put its Christmas bon bons at 30% off. Only 6% of Christmas subject lines carry a percentage, against 26% on Black Friday.
Christmas greetings for customers and clients
19 of the 93 are a greeting with nothing to sell. The best say something specific. OneSignal told customers it had given its holiday budget to Feeding America and Lonely Whale on their behalf. The Indigo Project sent good wishes and then a list of Australian support helplines for anyone finding the holidays hard. Asena Family Office kept it to a few lines and the dates the office would be closed, which is all a client needs.
Gift guides and last-minute gift cards
13 of the 93 help the reader choose a gift. The Art Gallery of NSW sent a Christmas gift guide built around its shop. Tribute asked "Need a Last-Minute Holiday Gift?" on Christmas Eve, when nothing physical can arrive in time. Undercard Boxing sent three plain lines: its gift cards are live, and you choose the amount. A gift card email is the one to send after your delivery cut-off.
Countdowns, events and themed newsletters
The last 19 use Christmas as the theme rather than the offer. Pit Viper brought back its "12 Days of Turbo" giveaway, Merivale invited readers to book the restaurant for the festive season, and Scripted turned its regular newsletter into "Merry Scripted's Newsletter, Everyone!".
When to send Christmas emails
When the 93 Christmas emails arrived
by the date in the sender's own time zone| When | Emails | Share |
|---|---|---|
| November or earlier | 15 | 16% |
| 1 to 14 December | 32 | 34% |
| 15 to 24 December | 42 | 45% |
| 25 December onward | 3 | 3% |
Christmas email peaks late. 42 of the 93, 45%, arrived in the ten days before Christmas, and 51% came earlier. The order that works is the one the dates force: gift ideas and the sale in late November and early December, the delivery cut-off a few days before it, a gift card email after it, and the greeting last.
Send fewer to people who have already bought. The same list has had Black Friday and Cyber Monday in the weeks before, and a reader who marks you as spam in December is one you lose for the year. Check where your emails are landing before the busiest week, and segment out recent buyers.
How Christmas emails differ from Black Friday emails
Christmas emails against Black Friday emails and other promotional emails
93 Christmas, 113 Black Friday and 3,538 other promotional emails, same two inboxes| What we measured | Christmas | Black Friday | Other promotional |
|---|---|---|---|
| Warm tone | 41% | 12% | 17% |
| Urgent tone | 17% | 60% | 29% |
| A percentage in the subject line | 6% | 26% | 14% |
| An emoji in the subject line | 42% | 41% | 26% |
| Hero image | 32% | 36% | 25% |
| Product grid | 19% | 18% | 8% |
| Plain text layout | 17% | 24% | 23% |
| Exactly one call to action | 25% | 35% | 33% |
Christmas emails are warm where Black Friday emails are urgent. 41% are written in a warm tone, against 12% of Black Friday emails. Only 17% are urgent, against 60%.
The emoji stays: 42% of Christmas subject lines have one, about the same as Black Friday. The percentage goes: 6% against 26%. A tree or a gift in the subject line does the work a discount did in November.
So if your Black Friday emails were loud, make the Christmas ones the opposite. Lead with the date, the gift, or a thank-you, and keep the discount for the body.
Next to this one
Christmas follows Black Friday emails and Cyber Monday emails, and all three sit in our seasonal and holiday email examples. The same library, cut by the job the email does: sale emails, promotional emails and newsletters.
Questions about Christmas emails
A short thank-you that says something specific. OneSignal told customers it had donated its holiday budget on their behalf, and Asena Family Office added the dates its office would close. 41% of the 93 Christmas emails we collected are written in a warm tone.
"Merry Christmas from all of us at [company], and thank you for this year." Put the company name in the subject line so the reader knows who it is from. 19 of the 93 Christmas emails we collected are greetings like this, with nothing to sell.
The offer, the last day to order for delivery before Christmas, and one button. 13 of the 93 Christmas emails we collected are about delivery cut-offs or closing dates, and the deadline is often a stronger reason to buy than the discount.
Mostly in December. 45% of the 93 we collected arrived between 15 and 24 December. Send gift ideas and the sale first, the delivery cut-off a few days before it, then a gift card email and your greeting.
62 of the 93 Christmas emails we collected are shown. We left out emails whose images did not load when we rendered them, repeat sends of one brand's template, and a few that were weak or off topic. The percentages describe all of them.
The emails under each industry are concept emails designed using the Nitrosend MCP. Sephora, Wayfair, Ulta Beauty and Duolingo are not Nitrosend customers and did not send or endorse them.
