What survey emails are
A survey email asks recipients to provide feedback on a product, service, or experience. These emails typically link to an external questionnaire or embed a short poll directly within the message. Their primary goal is to gather data that can inform business decisions and improve customer satisfaction.
This page is one slice of the Nitrosend email library. It holds 352 real emails from 253 brands, all of them collected out of two ordinary inboxes. Nothing here is a mockup.

What 352 of them actually do
Survey emails are often neglected in design. Most brands opt for a functional look. We found 73% use a monochrome colour palette. Design styles are overwhelmingly minimal (41%), plain text (27%), or utilitarian (26%). Just 1% use bold graphics.
Brands often include multiple ways to engage, but a significant portion keep it simple. The median survey email has two calls to action. Almost half of all emails (48%) use exactly one. Most brands personalise the greeting. 67% address the recipient by their first name.
The tone is generally informative, not promotional. 44% of survey emails use a neutral tone. Another 27% are warm, and 22% are instructional. Promotional tones are rare, appearing in only 1% of the emails we collected.
Subject lines reflect this focus. 30% are descriptive, and 22% are personalised. Only 12% offer a promotional discount. This aligns with the overall goal of gathering feedback rather than pushing sales.
Survey emails are primarily used for retention efforts. A large majority, 78%, are sent during the retention lifecycle stage. Fulfilment accounts for another 11%. This shows they are used to check in with existing customers. Most survey emails are brief. 68% are short, and 13% are micro.
None of this helps if the send never lands, which is a promotional email problem rather than a design one.
